U.S.S. Platte AO-24 Association

The USS Platte AO-24 Association was founded in 1999 by Lynn Todd of Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Lynn served in Platte during the Korean War and had always wondered what became of the guys he had served with. He started his search for Platte veterans with a picture of the ships' crew taken in San Diego. With the aid of a list of the crews' names made during Christmas season 1952, Lynn tackled the internet for telephone numbers that matched names on the list. He enlisted former shipmates Roger Stevens and Charles Rixey to aid in the effort. The result was contact with 60 of those former shipmates. Since that time, 251 new names have been added to the list by announcements in the VFW magazine, by contacts through internet web sites, and by referrals from other members. Of these, 194 ex-Platte crewmen have joined the Association, including Platte veterans of World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War and Viet Nam. 100 of these former crew members were able to meet old shipmates and make new friends at Platte City, Missouri in May of 2002. Mike Brown coordinated the reunion events in Platte City. It was the first reunion in Plattes' history and it is our wish that future meetings and reunions will be welcomed by those who share so much of their past. The Association's list needs to grow to preserve the heritage belonging to so many Americans who served America aboard U.S.S. Platte AO-24.

The Mission of the U.S.S. Platte Association

To preserve the history of those who served this nation in times of war and peace, we dedicate our effort to the men who were Ships' Company aboard U.S.S. Platte AO-24 from it's commissioning to its' final days. The tales told by these men and the memories they rekindle reflect the lives and experience of millions of young men who served and also those of the young men and women presently serving aboard United States Navy ships of the line. Those tales of life on the sea and Liberty Call in ports around the world must be kept in our memories to share with those who follow in our wake.
